Top 5 Ways to Keep Hardwood Floors Clean And Shiny

Shiny Wood Flooring

Nobody really wants to clean. But in order to maintain the original quality and form of the items in our home, regular cleaning is required. Technology has certainly made it easier for us to handle the cleaning tasks that we have in our everyday life. However, when it comes to cleaning hardwood floors, no technology can replace the glory of manual cleaning.

Character and elegance are the main reasons why homeowners choose to install hardwood in their house. If you are interested in hardwood flooring, you also have to know the proper ways to clean it to maintain its elegance.

Wood is a beautiful, natural and stylish decorating material. This material is also highly susceptible to damages such as scratches and accumulated dirt. We may be under the impression that we are cleaning the surface but in reality, we neglect to check the gaps and cracks between the wood.

Here are some ways that you can properly clean and shine your hardwood flooring:

1. Dry Sweeping

Aside from sweeping the wooden floor, use a fine brush to remove the dust and small pebbles that may have stuck between the cracks and gaps of the floor. This requires extra effort because you have to check every possible gap or crack.

2. Damp Mopping

The floor ideally should not be made too wet or the water should not be splashed on the floor. In its place a mop could come to salvage. A wet mop would be a good option to have the dampening effect on the floor. It is important to remove the dust and debris before pulling the mop on the whole floor. Use a broom if it is manageable to clean off the dust or a use a vacuum cleaner.

3. Cleaning Detergents

Avoid over using cleaning agents to prevent subsequent damage to the wood. Mildew is the primary cause of damage on the wood. However, over usage of harsh chemicals that eliminates mildew can also become the source of the wood’s degradation. Take it easy on applying cleaning agents because it can deteriorate the wood as well. Under no circumstances should you use ammonia or wax-based cleaners, bleach, polish, oil soaps, or other harsh detergents on your delicate hardwood floors.

4. Vacuum

Use the bare floor setting on your canister vacuum to further remove dirt and debris once each week. Please do not vacuum your hardwood floors if your vacuum does not have the bare floor setting. The best vacuum for wood floors will have a setting that stops the vacuum’s beater bar from spinning, which is a critical need for such floors. The beater bar can do tremendous damage to wood flooring. If you need to vacuum deep into corners, use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum hose.

5. Annual Floor Sealing

Another important part of the upkeep for hardwood flooring is an annual sealing. This allows you to preserve the finish and natural color of the floor, but the sealer that you choose is important. Regardless of the brand, the sealer shouldn’t have any dyes mixed in, as this could alter the color of the floor, not enhance it. Apply the sealer to part of the wood for cleaning and, then, use a mop or rag to spread it evenly over the wood. Allow it to dry once spread all over the hardwood. Buff it, then, once the sealer is completely dry.

As a matter of fact, hardwood floor cleaning and maintenance is very easy if done correctly. All you need is good care, occasional deep hardwood floor cleaning, and consistent/correct maintenance to prevent dirt buildup and any accidental damage from happening. Cleaning is one way of avoiding the costly repairs and maintenance of the flooring.

Aside from cleaning hardwood floors, there are also some things that can be done to avoid damage on the floor. You can place area rugs or mats in every entry point to collect dirt and prevent it from being stuck in the wooden floor. Tiny particles such as pebbles are like sandpaper that scratches your floor. Always remember to shake out the rugs and mats regularly so that the accumulated dust would not stuck on the floor.

Best Ways to Clean Carpet Milk Spills

Carpet Milk Spill

There is nothing good about milk stains and it’s worse when they are on your carpet! They are ugly and stubborn, and take the beauty out of even the most exquisite fabric and your guests have to see them every time they visit! So, how can you get rid of this eyesore and have your perfect ‘milk-stain-less’ carpet back? Stay with me, I’ll show you how.

How Long Has it Been?

To know how to best clean a milk stain off your carpet, you first need to establish how long that stain has been on the carpet. The longer a stain stays on the carpet, the harder it is to remove it. It is therefore imperative that you remove a milk stain as soon as it forms. If you weren’t able to remove it immediately, there is no cause for worry. We can still show you how to get rid of it without tears!

Fresh Milk Stains

To get rid of a fresh milk stain, quickly get some warm water and add some detergent. Using a a clean cloth (the point is to remove the stain, not to add) scrub the stained area thoroughly until the stain is totally absorbed. Rinse off the detergent with plain water and let it dry. Be careful to scrub even the surrounding areas that have not yet been stained since milk stains tend spread like ink on paper.

When Did it Get Here?

So you just noticed a milk stain and you have no idea when it got there! Older milk stains may be much harder to get rid of, but do not despair, we will show you how to permanently remove them. The first thing you need to to do is soak it up. Use warm water and detergent just like the first time and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Scrub again and rinse it off.If the stain is still there, soak the stained part of the carpet in hydrogen peroxide for at least 45 minutes and then scrub it again. Make sure to use hand gloves while using hydrogen peroxide.

Special Instructions for Colored and Flowered Carpets

Care needs to be taken with carpets that are colored or flowered. Do not use bleach on such carpets as they will fade and you will end up with an uglier, permanent stain. This should also be applied to hydrogen peroxide, as it may tend to bleach some carpets depending what dye was used to make he carpet. Make sure you read the washing instructions for your carpet beforehand.

What’s That Smell?

Milk may tend to produce an unpleasant odor even after the stain has been successfully removed. There are a few basic kitchen ingredients that can help in getting rid of this smell, such as:

  1. Vinegar
  2. Baking soda
  3. Hydrogen peroxide

Spray some vinegar on your carpet depending on the thickness of the carpet and let it sit for a while before washing it off with clean water. If vinegar is not readily available, the good old baking soda can do the same magic! You don’t even have to be in a hurry with baking soda, let it sit as long as 48 hours to completely get rid of the odor.

These are some of the best ways to clean carpet milk spills. Do not let a simple milk spill ruin your carpet for good, follow my lead, thank me later!

My Journey to Finding a Pet Vacuum for Hardwood Floors

I have just had my floors redone from carpet to laminate. I also have pets and my old vacuum (and I do mean OLD) was really built for carpets.

Pet Hair on Hardwood

I need a new vacuum, and it’s been a long time since I’ve shopped for one. Since I have a tendency to charge out and buy the first thing I see I need to stop and carefully consider what to look for when buying a pet vacuum.

  1. Price – a quick glance on Google search engine shows an average price range of about $60 to $600 for a brand new pet vacuum. I am not made of money so I need to pick a price range that I can manage. After all, I just spent a lot of money to have my floors redone. I want a cleaning machine that’s economical but powerful enough to do the job.
  2. Bag or cup – Personally, I think the era of the vacuum bags is over. A dust cup is so much easier to handle. How easy it is to detach is a feature I will be looking for. Even bagless vacuums have filters. Does the vacuum I am looking at have washable filters or ones that have to be replaced occasionally?
  3. Attachments for furniture – I love attachments. I admit that I am a gadget freak. I also need to be able to reach into corners and behind furniture so I will need one with a hose and maybe a rotating brush to get the cat hair off the couch.
  4. Online or store – I love shopping online, but there are also times when I need to actually “play” with what I am considering buying. The convenience of having it shipped to my house often overrides my need to handle what I am considering purchasing.
  5. Brand name – There are a growing number of great brands becoming available, but top brands like Dyson still dominate the market. The “big” brand names also tend to carry a higher price tag but to get one that fits my needs may be worth spending a little extra. Also the bigger brands have better warranties then “off” brands
  6. Weight – I have recently become handicapped and a lightweight or self propelled vacuum for me is a must. ‘
  7. Cordless or corded – I hate cords, however, I also hate running out of battery power in the middle of projects.
  8. Steam – A lot of the new vacuums are including steam as an option. Do I need a vacuum with steam? I had a mold problem for awhile so this is something to think about.

Right now I am considering 3 different animal hair vacuums with different sets of features:

  1. BISSELL Symphany at under $200 at Walmart. This machine does not have a hose but the steam is such an advantage. It is a greener solution to cleaning.
  2. BISSELL PowerEdge Pet hard floor vacuum around $50 on Amazon. This one is a real wallet pleaser but it is missing some of the features I was originally looking for.
  3. Hoover High Performance Bagless Upright under $200 at Walmart. This vacuum has more of the features I am looking for. I like the fact that it has the hose and a telescoping extension wand. It also has a washable filter and an easy to empty dusk cup.
  4. Neato XV-21 Robotic Vacuum

Neato XV-21 Vs. Pet Hair:

As you can see, there are so many options out there. If you are looking for good pet vacuums for your hardwood floors, sit down and consider what you really need. You can use my list or come up with your own list to narrow it down.

Don’t forget that even though you need to pick up that pet hair, you still have cobwebs and dust in other places than the floors.

Handheld vacuums can assist you in keeping the interiors of your car and house clean by quickly removing mess and crumbs around these places. These gadgets are capable of accessing the small gaps that are normally inaccessible with a heavier and larger vacuum.

Handheld vacuum cleaners are synonymous to convenience. Rechargeable and quite often found to be cordless, these gadgets are very handy if you are looking for something with which to vacuum your car with ease. Here are some of the best handheld vacuums in 2015 that you can consider as budget buys for taking care of the mess in inaccessible parts of your home.

Black and Decker Platinum BDH2000FL 20-Volt cordless

Featuring a new Lithium-ion battery capable of delivering 20V power, the BDH2000FL is one of three new handheld cordless vacuums from the Platinum series. It is an upgrade on the Flex FHV1200 that worked with Nickel-Cadmium batteries and was notorious for its long charging time and extremely short battery life. The manufacturers of this new model, however, claim that it will offer better backup and charge six times faster as opposed to the Nickel-Cadmium based batteries. On the downside, it is heavier than its predecessor and also has a smaller capacity to hold dirt so you will be required to clean frequently while using it.

  • Short charge time
  • Flexible hose that is long enough to allow better access to certain areas while you can keep the appliance on the floor if you want.
  • Single charge capable of providing enough backup for effective spot cleaning around the house
  • Not as noisy as compared to some of the other vacuum cleaners

  • Has a very limited dirt-holding capacity
  • Narrow pathway makes it difficult to empty the canister
  • Not as powerful as compared to some of the cheaper versions
  • Lack of a replacement battery means that if it dies down after the warranty period, you can put it to very little use apart from making a very heavy paperweight out of it.

Black and Decker Platinum BDH2000L 20V Cordless Hand Vacuum

Another of the handheld vacuum cleaners in the Platinum series, this one too uses a Lithium ion battery of 20V capacity and has a superior backup compared to the older Nickel-Cadmium ones. This model features a more traditional design of handheld vacuums and compared to its siblings in the Platinum group, is much more stronger and with a bigger dust storage capacity. An upgrade on the CHV1510, the only modification has been the battery that is used while dust capacity and power continue to be the same.

  • One of the best lightweight vacuum machines and has a run time of nearly half an hour
  • Semi translucent dirt containers let you know when the canister has to be emptied
  • Crevice tools so that you can easily reach more areas around you and not have to bend down too low for cleaning floors
  • The head allows rotation at right angles in both directions so that you can have a better area coverage for cleaning

  • Be creful while rotating the head as it is not too flexible and may get dislodged on being twisted too hard
  • Integrated battery system requires a trip to the service center if you have to replace it irrespective of the circumstances
  • Lack of a tool for pets makes it tricky when you want to remove pet hair from your floors

Hoover Platinum LINX BH50030 Pet cordless

A unique new handheld vacuum cleaner, all attachments on this appliance are pivoted around a 25-degree angle, allowing complete surface contact to be maintained while you go back and forth on whatever area that you wish to clean. Thus you are allowed better maneuvering with this gadget. Although it is marketed as an appliance that is effective for removing pet hair from surfaces such as floors, stairs, chairs and tables, this appliance is more than capable of removing other types of dirt.

  • Dual attachment for picking up pet hair from sofas and carpets
  • Easy removal and replacement of batteries
  • Motorized brush allows for effective removal of dirt from upholstery and carpets
  • Cyclonic technology helps in maintaining a dirt-free filtration system while cleaning and allows gives you an efficient run even as the dust cup continues to fill up

  • Limited dirt capacity requires to empty it frequently
  • Not capable of handling pet hair in large volumes
  • It is expensive to purchase a replacement battery
  • Not effective if you use on leather

With a top rated handheld vacuum cleaner at your disposal, you may get the feeling of being in constant companionship of someone who will take care of all your cleaning needs. Best Rated Backpack Vacuum Cleaners

The idea of walking around my home with a bulky machine strapped to my back just seemed so ridiculous which is why I never purchased a backpack vacuum cleaner.

After years of owning inflexible upright cleaners and canister cleaners that were just too tedious for hardwood flooring, I decided it was time to look for the best hardwood floor vacuum out there. I was faced with a dilemma though because never having owed one I didn’t know where to start; this is the list I compiled of the top 5 backpack vacuum cleaner currently available to help me decide.

Know Where to Start

If a backpack cleaner is too heavy or uncomfortable just back away, a good machine is one that is light weight, well balanced on your shoulders and practically makes no sound. These are the cleaners that I tested and tried before making my choice.

Oreck PRO6

The PRO6 weighs about 10lbs so it’s very lightweight and the package includes 5 tools:

  • A reversible angle hose.
  • 2 piece wand.
  • A two stage whisper motor.
  • Its cord is 50ft long so you can walk around your house easily.
  • The inside of the machine is insulated with waffle foam.

Oreck also offers a 12 month warranty so if anything goes wrong they will replace the entire machine.

GV 8 Qt

The GV 8 looks really stylish but since looks aren’t nearly enough these are its specs:

  • Like the Oreck it also weighs 10lbs but it actually looks much smaller.
  • Its cloth bag size is 8 quarts so its capacity is larger than the former machine however its cord at 25ft is not as long.
  • You can even clean leaks and spills easily with the GV because it sucks up a maximum of 98 inches of water.
  • Some of its attachments include a hose, power nozzle and brush-roll.

You won’t have to worry about damage for at least 2 years with the GV because you have the manufactures warranty.
